1. No Purchase Necessary
1.2 Purchasing Challenging Challenges may provide additional clues, but it does not constitute an entry fee. Challenge is based solely on skill, effort, and successful location of the Hidden Book.
1.3 All eligible individuals may participate whether or not they purchase the book.
2. Eligibility
2.2 Employees, contractors, partners, family members and direct affiliates of the Challenge creators—including James and Matt—are not eligible.
2.3 Participation constitutes full acceptance of these Official Rules.
3. Nature of the Challenge
3.2 The Challenge is a real treasure hunt involving a real financial reward (“the Prize Fund”).
3.3 The Hidden Book is placed in a concealed but publicly accessible location. No trespassing, destruction of property, or unlawful activity is required or permitted.
4. Prize Fund Structure
4.2 The Prize Fund increases by $1.00 for every copy of Challenging Challenges sold until the Hidden Book is found and verified.
4.3 All funds are held in a dedicated escrow account established exclusively for this Challenge.
4.4 The full Prize Fund will be released to the Verified Finder upon successful verification of the Hidden Book.
5. How to Participate
5.2 Additional clues are included within the book Challenging Challenges and may provide strategic advantage but are not required for participation.
5.3 Participants may opt in to receive updates and clues through the official “Join the Hunt” system.
6. Verification of the Hidden Book
6.2 The first participant to locate the Hidden Book must contact the Challenge organizers using the instructions included inside.
6.3 Organizers may request reasonable verification, including photographs, identity confirmation, GPS coordinates, or other supporting evidence.
6.4 The Prize Fund will not be released until completion of the verification process.
7. Prohibited Conduct
7.2 Participants may not damage natural features, structures, or protected land.
7.3 Interference with, harassment of, or obstruction of other participants is prohibited.
7.4 Tampering with, relocating, or misrepresenting the location of the Hidden Book is grounds for immediate disqualification.
8. Assumption of Risk
8.2 By participating, individuals voluntarily assume all risks associated with the Challenge.
8.3 Participants are solely responsible for their own safety, travel, navigation, and compliance with all applicable laws.
9. Tax Obligations
9.2 The organizers do not withhold or pay taxes on behalf of the winner.
9.3 If required by law, the organizers may issue an IRS Form 1099-MISC or any other applicable tax documentation reflecting the total value of the Prize Fund.
9.4 The Verified Finder is solely responsible for reporting the prize income and paying any resulting tax liability.
10. No Time Limit
10.1 The Challenge remains active until the Hidden Book is located and verified.
10.2 There is no deadline, expiration date, or fixed end period.
11. Modifications and Updates
11.2 Any material changes will be posted on the Challenge website. 11.3 Continued participation after such changes constitutes acceptance of the revised rules.
12. Disqualification
12.1 Failure to comply with any portion of these Official Rules may result in disqualification from the Challenge.
12.2 The organizers retain sole authority to determine disqualification.
13. Limitation of Liability
13.2 By participating, individuals release and hold harmless the organizers and all associated parties from any liability connected to the Challenge.
14. Final Determination
14.1 All decisions regarding verification of the Hidden Book, release of the Prize Fund, disqualification of participants, and interpretation of these Official Rules are final and binding.
15. Discovery and Notification Requirements
15.2 The first participant to physically locate the Hidden Book (“the Finder”) must notify the Challenge organizers within three (3) calendar days of discovery using the instructions contained inside the Hidden Book.
15.3 Failure to notify the organizers within the required three-day period may result in immediate disqualification, at the sole discretion of the organizers.
15.4 If the Finder fails to make contact within the stated time frame, the discovery may be deemed invalid, the Prize Fund will remain in escrow, and the Challenge will continue until a valid Verified Finder completes proper notification.
15.5 The Finder must retain possession of the Hidden Book and comply with all verification procedures outlined in Section 6.
15.6 If the organizers determine, in their sole discretion, that the Hidden Book has been found, moved, removed, relocated, tampered with, or otherwise disturbed without a valid and timely claim being made in accordance with these Official Rules, the Prize Fund shall be immediately frozen pending investigation. During that period, no further increases to the Prize Fund shall occur. The organizers reserve the right to suspend, modify, reset, invalidate, or terminate the Challenge, or to take any other action reasonably necessary to preserve the integrity of the Challenge and Prize Fund.
By choosing to participate in the Challenging Challenges Treasure Hunt, you acknowledge and agree that you are voluntarily engaging in an activity that carries inherent risks. The hidden book is located somewhere within the Pacific Northwest on public land, which may include uneven ground, steep or unstable terrain, dense vegetation, bodies of water, changing weather conditions, wildlife, and other natural hazards. Any decision to search for the hidden book is solely your own, and you accept full responsibility for your actions and safety.
Participation may involve physical exertion, navigating unfamiliar locations, traveling through remote areas, or attempting activities that require endurance, judgment, and situational awareness. These conditions can result in injuries—including sprains, falls, fractures, dehydration, getting lost, encounters with wildlife, environmental exposure, or other unpredictable events. You understand and accept that serious injury or even death may occur as a result of participating in this challenge.
You agree that neither the creators of Challenging Challenges, Challenging Challenges LLC, nor any associated individuals, partners, or representatives are responsible for monitoring your participation, guiding your search, or ensuring your safety. All decisions regarding where you go, how you search, and what level of risk you choose to undertake are entirely your responsibility.
By participating in the Treasure Hunt, you voluntarily assume all risks—known and unknown—and you release and hold harmless Challenging Challenges LLC and its creators from any and all liabilities, claims, damages, or injuries, including those resulting from serious harm or death, that may arise from your involvement.
